Thing is Matt, when you come to compete you are going to put yourself at a disadvantage if you can't use a shorter competition bar and even if you could, you'd be trained on the wider bar.
I would work on them shoulders mate - physio, stretching, etc - whatever it takes to sort them out. I am not flexible in the shoulder but can manage wide grip hands on the squat. This is following a lot of stretching.

Thanx for the advise, I'm stretching my shoulders out and it's made a big difference . This might sound odd seeing as I'm a avid follower of West side Barbell methods and a daily visiter to this forum, but I don't plan on competing, just love training heavy !, so no problem with changing to 8 ft bar. But I will keep up the shoulder rehab !

Shoulder mobility when squatting can also be affected by tight pecs, so make sure you stretch your pecs too
