I’m matt, I’m currently around 114kg and am 20 years old.. I’ve been lurking around the board for a while and thought it was time to say hey.. so hey :)

I’ve only competed in 2 powerlifting comps so far, the BDFPA NE qualifier and their british championship which was this weekend just gone..

My best lifts so far are squat 210kg (belt), bench 160kg (just me) and dl 280kg (belt) The belt was a flimsy weider bbing belt that I’ve had since I started training.. Just ordered an inzer 10mm belt, not sure if it will make any difference, but we’ll see!

I’ve been training solidly since I was about 16 although I was training as a (dare I say it?!) bodybuilder.. I’d still like to try a show one day but think dieting through my uni exams wouldn’t be the best of ideas.. I started to direct my training more towards strength about October last year having read a book called dinosaur training by brooks kubic? (think that’s how to spell his name) then decided to try a pl comp!

Anyway rambled on far too long for just wanting to say hi :)

Nah we give the new guys a chance to make a fool of themselves properly first before pouncing on them, however skinny black vest do tend to draw unwanted attention  as long as you stay realistic and honest on here the lads and lasses are sound.

Where about are you bro? May be useful finding a good plifting gym if your not in one to train with some of the other lifters, your lifts are solid and would improve further with guidance.

Haha you'll laugh at this.. i've been training in david lloyds pretty from the first dumbell i picked up till now!! however in an attempt to redeem myself, i handed in my notice (you have to give 3 months!!) and i've only got til 29th april left then i'm free.. so to answer your question my hometown is chester, well i live near it anyway, and im not sure of any powerlifting gyms in the area, i know of a couple of "dungeon bbing gyms" which look ok but if anyone can point me in the direction of any good gyms near chester i'd be grateful! I'm also in uni at leeds which is going to tie in well with andy boltons gym up there.. i've not been but im guessing there'll be alot of people who know what they're talking about there! and of course im hoping to leech as much info out of you guys as i can as time goes on :)

Hi Matt, damn good lifting on sunday mate. Great atmosphere wasn't it? Are you coming to Bradford for our single lifts?

Thanks, yeah i had a great day, didn't know what to expect but really enjoyed myself!! Are these the ones in july? Do you have to lift in singles to qualify or do you lifts from the full power count?

Jabba
04-08-2008, 04:40 PM
You just need to tell Neil Thomas ( contest sec. ) of your wish to do the single lifts, your competition lifts and the date/ comp where you achieved them . Most full power guys don't do the singles so understandably Neil doesn't automatically send invites from full power meets.

Haha i do a fair bit of none vested posing! ah shit no wait i didn't say that :)

i think the u23 deadlift record in bdfpa is 275kgs!

I was competing in the 110kg class the d/l record was 225.5 :) (i think the 125 is 270/280) i broke the bench and total records too :) i had to lose few kg to fit in which as i'm reasonably lean anyway resulted in me feeling a little weak on the day.. but i was pleased with the outcome since i'm only 20! Next comp i think im going to compete in the 125kg class cz i still want to add size and would rather not have to diet beforehand! oh well you live and learn!

Good to meet you both.. :)

Im at Bath University first year studying Biology mate, what about you?

Your lifts are very good, and drug free too. Are you looking to compete in bodybuilding but you like to lift heavy so you want to do powerlifting meets, sort of like a Johnnie Jackson style lol?

Whats wrong with dieting through uni exams also? Its not that hard isit, Anyway, only 1 month to go, then 4 months off cant wait!

Matt Pipe
04-11-2008, 05:09 PM
Yeah kinda like that :) though im not the biggest fan of professional bodybuilding by a long way!

im up at leeds uni doing biochemistry, 2nd year now.. yeah i know what you mean, bring on the summer, though gotta get through the exams first :( cant imagine being calorie depeleted is going to work wonders through revision time... plus my stomach rumbing every couple of seconds would be a big distraction too! I havent looked into the ins and out of it but at a glance just doesnt seem a good idea..

is that your uni gym in your youtube videos?! you're lucky if it is, the uni gym at leeds is bollocks, its just 2 squash courts knocked into each other.. full of complete twats too!

jamwithtupac
04-11-2008, 07:06 PM
Biochemistry must be some hard subject, Im finding Biology hard as nails! I rate anyone who does a science degree it is real tough.

Yeah that is my uni gym on my 190kg and 200kg squat, its a good gym, got good platform for olympic weightlifting and powerlifting so you can really take training seriously here if you want to get good at it.

There are also many Great Britains athletes and the England rugby team train here.

And yes there are still many twats in my gym, but I like to piss them off sometimes, probably why a few of them tell their gfs theyre intimidated by me lol haha and Im not joking, it makes me laugh though haha

Its ok.. really interesting when you get into it... its just getting round to it thats the hard bit!

sounds like a quality gym, i just couldnt stand all the bicep curls in the squat/power racks.. friday nights it used to be full of people in their going out stuff just getting a quick pump before they went to town.. not that they had anything to pump in the first place..

Yeah it does get interesting when you start to learn the work, you looking to go into the science fielf after? Im not at all.

I dont train Friday nights so wouldnt know, we have 5 squat racks, 2 proper decent ones for squatting though, so always racks to train in. 4 benches as well, only 2 are decent, but yeah we have lot of equipment, and looks like theyre going to get more. Im trying to get a monolift for my gym! but I can imagine 90% of students dropping the weights on their head or something when squatting ! so I guess we wont get one

Do the athletes and rugger buggers still do poncy quarter squats? I believe they used to when my brother was at Bath uni about a hundred years ago.

yes mate, they still do quarter squats haha with weights most guys on here can deep squat with. They also have taken to bouncing excessively on the bench press. Seriously dont know how this training is meant to be good for them.

They are training their ego's.

Undoubtedly they will tell all of their mates what they can bench press (probably add 20kg onto the figure too!).

You've hurt my delicate feelings! :(;)
There are a couple of us training for powerlifting at the Leeds Uni gym, but neither of us are very strong (190/120/215 and 145/120/185). There are another couple of guys who are probably going to start training with us as well, and it'd be great to get you down. I've never seen anyone deadlifting anything like 280 in the Leeds gym, so I'm guessing you don't go very often!

Our next session is tomorrow at 8, but I don't think either of us are going to be doing that hard a session.

Matt Pipe
04-15-2008, 07:47 PM
Haha sorry man, but seriously i dont know how you train in there... isn't it still packed to the rafters?
I only trained there once or twice a week last year cz its so packed, usually leg days as this was the only thing people didnt seem to do.. (assuming no one was curling in the power racks of course) yeah ill defo try and get down sometime.. whats your training looking like?

Matt Pipe
04-15-2008, 08:06 PM
I've lost the edit button.. just checked your journal, have to get a leg day or something in :) is it sill £4 to train there?

Phil E
04-16-2008, 11:43 AM
My training has been all over the place recently. Pretty much the only consistent thing is getting in a heavy lower body day each week, heavy upper body and some back work. Keir (the guy I train with) has decided to be a bit a knob and do total body stuff three times per week for a while, but I guess we can start each session with a different main lift.

My current plan is something like:

Mon 5pm: bench
Wed 8pm: squats
Fri 5pm: back
Sat 1pm: floor press

I can change the Monday or Friday times if you want to do a different time. Reducing the volume on the main lifts over a few weeks, deload week, then upping the volume again. And one or two accessory exercises if I feel like it. When my bench went utterly to shit, I started doing loads more accessory stuff and it got even worse, so I'm going back to heavy floor pressing and heavy benching once each per week. Only one lower body day per week, as my back starts getting shitty again if I do more than that (screwed a disc when I was 20). Might put in some speed deads on Saturday though.

Bloody hell, that's a lot of waffling! Short stort: see the times above!

Yeah, it's generally pretty packed, but you can go at emptier times and it's pretty easy to get a rack at most times anyway. Tonight's session should be fine as it's normally fairly empty at 8. Yeah, £4 for non-students, think it might only be £2.50 if you're a member of the uni though.... but might be talking crap.

Change of plan: we're going at 7 tonight. Dunno if this is gonna be the case every Wednesday; depends on what hours Keir's working.

Cool, no worries mate. We're training at 7 not 5 this Friday. Times keep changing. Maybe I should set up an e-mail list or something.

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt; for all you know I could be a complete twat after all! :icon_ton: Hit a 200kg squat today, but through gearwhoring... Keir convinced me to do a couple of sets with really tight wraps. I'm only one step removed from triple ply half squats :-?

Leeds only has one hall on campus .. the rest are kinda to the west of the uni all on the way to studentville (headingly - leeds student area) to be honest i dont go out 'partying' that much.. fortunately (at the time) me and my school mates looked alot older than we were when we were younger so we'd been clubbing since about late 15, 16 years old then started going to liverpool for bigger nights out about a year after that, so kinda out grew that going out getting smashed and throwing up everywhere between 15-18 don't get me wrong i'll still go out for things like mates bdays/ concerts/ end of term bashes etc and i'm hanging out in one of the union pubs nearly every day with my mates! i dont really drink anymore tho.. and if i did it would be cz i wasnt training the next day!! and i'll always have a couple of meals in tupawares (spelling?) where ever i go to get my food in :) oh and im in 2nd year :) think that covered everything?!!

Thanks yeah it does, I still go out twice a week or so, but I dont drink, dont need to, I go nuts anyway and can have a good time without drink, probably will cut partying down in 2nd year, probs will have to as well! thats good lifting, youre very lean and muscular probably from the bodybuilding work, keep it up.

When you say youre more of a bodybuilder, do you mean you train in high reps, like 8-10 reps but you go heavy, I use to train like this when I was bb lol but then again I only started squatting and deadlifting last year lol

Matt Pipe
04-17-2008, 04:39 PM
not quite.. when i say i'm still training bbr ish that i meant things like technique, eg bench press i still have a fairly wide grip and don't really tuck my elbows (yet - im working on my problems) also scdule, eg (and im no way im saying this is good, or what anyone should do, this is the result of my ego and the mindset that i was in) i trained up until my last comp like mon: back, tues: shoulers/tris thurs: legs, fri: chest/arms doing 5x5 on deads 3x5 bench and 5x5 squat on the respective days, the 5x5 took my squat from 192.5->210(although i didnt get it in comp, i've had it in the gym..) bench 142.5->160 and dead 236->280.. in 3 months, i believe these improvements to be a result of the 5x5/3x5 which i hadn't done before and were probably 'newbie' gains.. thats what i meant my bbr ish. my actual reps doing everything never went higher than 8..

i'm curently on an upper/lower split tho i dont do any speed work (yet).. i trained today with a guy who does, and was picking his brains about it for the whole session! but now i think i have a better idea of what to do and am ready to start trying different things :)

jamwithtupac
04-17-2008, 06:29 PM
o cool, thats good gains in 3 months from the 5 x5 or 3 x 5 training, when I started doing this from bodybuilding training, my gains jumped bigtime as well. Your deadlift is awesome 280kg, you thinking of converting to the bpc or bpo anytime? for some equipped lifting?
