hey this is my first post and im looking for advice. i hear im in the right place :)
i have a shoulder injury which gives me the most pain when i am bench pressing..to the point now where i cannot bench..it feels like its front deltoid..but there is no bruising that indicates its a tear..i believe it is rotator cuff. but no specialist has said it is or isnt.i have had deep tissue massages on it but the problem has only got slightly better in the last 6/8 weeks...
any advice??

i know i did the british juniors the other week...it even knocked 15 kg off my squat.confidence issue i guess.but it affected my bench by 25kg....have you had an injection into the site??many people i know from the gym have said they had that from the doctors?

no cos no ones going to stick needles in me ! the injection your talking about is a type of steroid that realy only masks the pain and aparently can damage the joint further, Dave Gadd had three of those years ago but the trouble came back then the stupid doctor said you know what your trouble is you have one collar bone an inch longer than the other so they cut an inch out some time later he got more shoulder trouble and a different doctor said its because you have one coller bone longer than the other ! he is now two inches narrower across the shoulders than he started out and still gets a bit of trouble when benching :)

Your talking about cortasone ( or something ) injections, and they can lead to more problems than they are worth, to the point that your not supposed to even move then injected joint for a certain ammount of time.

I had the same thing last year. Rest is the only cure, but work round it when you're resting and hit the rear delts to iron out any imbalances (face pulls, shoulder horn, reverse flyes, etc., etc.).

I f**ked my shoulder about 3 years ago, it dislocated while I was benching!
I've had x-rays, MRI injections/scans, physio, arthroscopic surgery (found some fooked tendons), radiotherapy, more physio etc etc...
I still have shoulder problems, I can't sleep on my right side anymore, I can't lift heavy oubjects to my front at 45 degrees, handstands are out the equation lol...
I've just started some light, high rep shoulder traning to try and build as much muscle up around the shoulder to try and stabilize it more.
Rear, front, side delt raises are all very good exercises to do...

Just one piece, GO TO A MEDICAL EXPERT! You wouldn't ask your dentist to fix the gearbox on your car. I thought I had a slight tear/strain and continued for 5 months with no improvement, within 10 seconds of removing my shirt, my physio told me I needed surgery. I had completely torn the supraspinatus (rotator cuff) attachment.

Ouch! When did you do this Jabba? And how quickly did you get back to training?

Had the surgery July 06, that's why I wasn't lifting in Ireland. Wasn't allowed to touch a weight AT ALL for 3 months. The guy who did the surgery has an excellent reputation ( I have great health insurance at work) and I had loads of physio afterwards. One big problem was that I had learned to make movements of my shoulder/ upper back using the "wrong" muscles because of the injury, relearning to use the right muscles is difficult and boring. The physio and my GP couldn't understand why I didn't know when the injury had occurred but the surgeon said it was probably wear and tear, a minor tear that got worse because I carried on training. This is why I shudder when I see people asking laymen like ourselves for medical advice. This is a fantastic site for information on powerlifting but the doctor's surgery is the place to go for injuries that don't improve in the expected time span.

look out a decent physio, mostly the better option than the doctor for these types of things. some doctors are good with sporting injuries but mostly i have found they look to get you pain free just rather than sorting the actual problem, but that could just be that I have seen crap doctors. just my experience. though of course a good physio will cost a bit. but worth it to get the problem sorted properly.
I have had similar problems with partial dislocations and subluxation in the shoulder. mine still not 100% but with lots of rehab now manageable.

That's one hell of a sweeping statement. I'd like to know how my rotator would have reattached itself without being sewn back on.
I went to my physio first but in BUPA you have to be sent to a surgeon via a doctor. In fairness to my GP, when he heard who my physio is and what she had diagnosed, he just took a cursory glance at my shoulder, said " yup she's right" and referred me.

I was pleasantly surprised Tom, the physios 1st words when I removed my shirt were " I hope you've got insurance" a pleasant change from " who do you think you're going to satisfy with THAT"

go 2 a good physio for several sessions of deep tissue massage in the area, stop benching at first. use a heat pack and/or tens machine on days u aren't getting physio. do shoulder stretching and mobility work after physio seems to be working. start benching light again before ur course of physio ends - it will see if physio is working and allow physio to help repair damage caused by the previous bench session. it will stop a/c joint from weakening too much aswell. go to t-nation and look up shoulder mobility work for exercises for u to do. work on bench technique aswell. these all helped me. good luck

thanks booked into a physio to see what they suggest.but been reffered to a shoulder specialist as well.i think it may be a small tear to the rotator cuff. v.annoying though
its a weird injury as i can press over head and do all the exercises without pain until i bench.

i had a trapped nerve in my neck last may which caused a lot of pain in my left shoulder. i started benching again in october only going very light
but now when i get to about 90kgs it feels like someone has loaded the bar wrong.
its very frustrating:mad:

I'm Curious. Never heard of bicep tendinitus in that location, its usually at the elbow end. Out of interest, what exercise or whatever do you think caused this....so we can all learn.

i think the physio said that you have to tendons connecting the bicep to the shoulder. the longer one and the short one.the pain feels front deltoid.as this is where the tendons are.aparently they are inflamed and due to lack of bloody supply to that area, take a decent amount of time to heel.obviously i wouldnt know if this is true or not.just what the physio has said and advised me to do.

Your just going to have to take a rest from benching or anything else that aggrevates it James, its frustrating I know but unfortunatly it goes with the sport, on the plus side it should repair itself reasonably quickly at your age, us old tossers take months to heal.

as a gp id say
keep your shoulder blades tight and don’t let em move when you press
keep elbows tucked and don’t let em writhe outwards when you struggle with heavier weights
strong posterior chain
see Justin hurleys bench postings on this site
rest not injections pills and potions
hope this helps
