Just wondering: what do you wear on your feet when deadlifting *in training*, and why? I'm not talking here about wearing slippers for a competition single for the purpose of minimising the sole, but about what you'd use for standard training (e.g. a set of 5 from the floor, or even pulled from the pins). Do you find that special footwear (e.g. wrestling shoes or such like) is actually beneficial in terms of the training effect, activating posterior chain, etc., or do you wear e.g. trainers which offer more support to the arches of your feet?

i just use boxing boots. minimises sole to immitate a comp single and i dont have to go about changing shoes for the rest of my training.

i really dont think different shoes make a difference in kgs more so comfort?

i do however wear cons for squatting as they have a completely flat sole which suits me.

I use the above in training, they have quite a thick sole so makes DL'ing in slippers that little bit easier...

Metal squat boots.

Don't think footwear will make a drastic change as you probably know. You can lift the certain weight or you can't.

Nike wrestling boots. Before them i had Adidas wrestling boots. I squat, bench and deadlift in them. Got some Chuck Taylor Converses but they add at least an inch to my ROM. I just need to knock off 2inches from my deadlift and i'm sorted.

Many thanks for the responses. What I notice is that nobody has mentioned any difference in muscle activation - e.g. that a completely flat sole might encourage recruitment of glutes and hams (which phenomenon would interest me).

Doc, I have tried a lot of different shoes, polish lifting shoes circ 1970 with a 1 inch hard heel, hard soled reboc trainers, socks, surfing slips, martial arts slippers, addidas boxing high lace ups and lonsdale leather boxing mid calf lace ups. My favourite are the lonsdale leather boxing boots but at £130 I guess they were not worth it simply for the deadlift, but they feel good and give a flat foot with good ankle support. However they take ages to get on and lace up so I dont often use them.
Its interesting that my best deadlifts have been achieved when I have been fired up and committed and I cant actually remember what footwear I was using?? Maybe as one of the others said - you can either lift it or you cant.
I recon whatever makes you feel more prepared - placebo??

thats not something ive noticed plainly from shoes???positions maybe, or the positions the shoes put you in. but ive always had a flat sole when deadlifting in. only difference was when i used con's to deadlift in which mean the bar traveled more. still a flat sole like slippers have..

I use deadlift slippers I got from lifting large. I have had them well over a year. These will not make your toes sore. They only cost $8

Bare foot for deadlifts and squats and GM (also standing military press & DB side bends)

I am so used to bare foot training that I feel uncomfortable if I wear shoes (unstable), though if I am in a gym that require I cover my feet, I wear the CHUCKS.

Regarding movement - bare foot, I can feel the weight on my heels and wiggle my toes freely :)

I know I don't DL and Squat what you guys do, but when I train I use either

Adidas Goodyears (when i'm in my college gym)
or Adidas Tyguns (when i'm at my boxing gym)

and they are both PERFECT for me, the Goodyears are also so comfortable for running in aswell if your interested
