Hi everyone!

have been thinking about getting into powerlifting, i have never done it before and think it will be great to get into.

i currently weigh 77kg and am 5'9. i go down the gym and am on a push pull split, my lifts are -
squat 165kg - i go bench deep
Bench 107kg
dead - 140kg

i have only been doing squats and deads for about 4 months. If i want to get into it do i need to get my total upto 490kg as it says on the BDFPA site? as i only have 412 at the moment.
how long should i wait to compete?

Don't wait - just start! The total mentioned is the British qualifying total and you don't need that to lift in divisional events. Just join the fed(s) of your choice and get stuck in.

well the best thing would be just to decide when and where you want to lift and give it a go.
good luck

Compete now Coady, me first comp was last saturday and my lifts arnt that spetacular.

I came in at 72.7kg body weight in the 75kg weight class.

I lifted;

92.5kg bench but missed it due to racking to early (i think, i forgot to ask judge) or might of been that it took me to long to get it up, either way..
157.5kg deadlift.

It doesnt matter what lifts you have, its all about the experience.

i believe the BDFPA makes you wait for the first three months after joining before you can compete though i know they often dont stick to the rule

I think the three month wait is to compete in the Brits, but it might be to actually qualify for the Brits which amounts to what you said Hellspawn!

Hi Coady,

Find a comp and give it a go. Have some fun at your first competition and use it to learn from.

Also, your location is SE London - where abouts? If you'd like to come down to Crystal Palace and join us for training, send me a PM.

You can't lift in the Brits or set records until you've been a member for 3 months, but you can lift in divisional comps straight away.

yes thats what i meant Cuntos and Martin , i was looking at a recent BDFPA area championship which would have been a qualifier for their British and several first timers were competing (though they were hardly novices) and they entered at short notice which shows they are more flexable with their rules than the Ulster BWLA comp recently was.

I started powerlifting at 15 years old and i wasn't very strong! give it a go! u'll love it.

165kg squat with only 4 months training is really good anyway.
