Now i know people will use different boards to aid there shirted bench press, but hypothetically speaking if you had to choose only 1 board to use to do board presses from what would it be, prosuming that each board is 2 inches deep (example 2 board press=4 inches, 4 board= 8 inches deep) how many boards would you go for.

Personally, I would use a 4", actually thats pretty much all i use now.

Beacuse a shirt gives me support for about the first 4", after that im on my own. Also 4" is my stalling point in raw bench.

It all depends on your week point Keith but me and Justin only ever use 2 and 3 boards. I think that the actual ROM for a 4 board for me would be hardly anything and not worthwhile.

Apparently in America a "two by four" board is NOT 2" x 4", but is actually only 1.5" thick. I guess it's cos it's two inches before it's planed or something.

The point is, when the American's use, for example, 4 boards, they are only 6" thick (4 x 1.5") which is like us using 3 boards if we are using boards which are really 2" thick.

I'm not making this up!

yeah i understand what your saying, ive been using approx a 6 -7 inch board which i do after my shirted bench press. wondering if i would be better of using a different board thickness.

We use different numbers of boards to work different parts of the bench press. You will probably find a number of boards with which you are very weak and, if you work that area, your bench might go up significantly.

i think it depends on where your weak, would you say board presses have any benefit to the raw lifter?

Yes, they will always help your lock out. I can get almost anything (within reason) to start moving off my chest but can't always lock it. Boards will help my lock out and therefore my raw bench. If someone is weak off the chest but good at locking out board work will be less useful.

I normally do a BP "off the chest" day and one "lockout+speed BP day".
My program on the lockout day looks like this:

- BP off 5" block 3 sets
- Rack Lockouts 3 sets
- Speed BP Sometimes 8sets, sometimes 5 sets
- Lats x5 sets

hows your training going javier, getting stronger? You competing again soon, either BPO or BPC?

Training is going allright at the moment Keith. Had a problem with the ligaments in my right knee 3 months ago but now I'm back 100%. Not planning to compete at the moment. If I decided to compete it would be the BPC Open though.

I believe it's actually 1.75". Should be the same the world over.

It's cut to 2" at the yard and then an 1/8th of an inch is taken off each side to dress it.

I like a 4 board (7" in my money), but I have long arms, and I feel it's about where the shirt stops giving me much.

On here it says it's 1.5" x 3.5": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timber

I stand corrected. Evidently they take a quater inch off each side.

youd do better to get more agressive with trainingg and stop being a facts anorak,or you will find out if an english bit of 2 by 4 hurts as much as a fractionally smaller american one, when smashed over ones head by jove you compleat cad.lol

As an American who not only buys 2x4's but has also sawn them on a sawmill they are indeed 1.5*3.5. Its not Geroge Bush's fault but you can blame him all the same. Its actually been going on for quite a while. If you do a remodel on an older home though you will find full 2x4's.

2x4 is 1.5 inches thick. Each powerlifting board should be 1.5inches thick, not 2inches thick.
I prefer to use a 3 or 4 board, but i have LONG arms. For someone with shorter arms, a 4bd would leave them with 2 inches to lock out. Anything less than a 3-4bd and my shirt starts to kick in, so i can actually lift MORE weight with a slightly longer ROM.

we do all shirted boards to 4inch,then raw 7inch close grip boards after shoulders in seperate day.(these are dropped a few weeks from comp though)
