Hi folks - I have a question regarding deadlift training. I love the deadlift (Sumo - as it is easier for my 'build') but the gym where I train does not have a squat/power rack - so it's Smith machine or nothing.

I usually warm up with a few sets of slow deep squats using only the olympic bar then work my way up to max single lifts. On alternate days I do RDLs. There is no G/H raise machine - only leg curl seated/and laying down versions - and the usual leg extension and leg press machines.

My concern is training only doing deadlift movements - will this cause any harm.

I should add that I don't train for symetry or looks and I don't compete. I just like to train. My deadlift is at 400lb the same as my raw bench - surely it should be more??? So, is it possible and SAFE to train in this way to increase strength.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading any advice you may have.

I just read this post - the smith machine refers to squats - I do the DL with regular bar of course

You said yourself that you dont train for looks or compete. Just like to train. In that case just doing the deadlift is fine.
However if you do wish to train legs you could always employ barbell hack squats or dumbell lunges. They would be nice substitutes for lack of a rack.
After some leg training you may even find an increase in your dead.

I wouldn't go for smith squats as I find them an awkward exercise and an unnatural movement.

Well everybody is different but in most cases you will find people's deadlift are generally higher than their bench.

Yep walking DB lunges are your friend here...Or why not clean a bar and do some front sq's ?
