Don't postpone it mate, just go along and you'll find someone to help you as long as you aren't too shy. Open really light (maybe 120k? )and play it by ear. I've got mates who have been going to compete in powerlifting/strongman/bodybuilding "next year" for about ten years!

I second what Cuntos says. I went to my first comp by myself but met loads of people there including Justin, Chris Jenkins, Dean Bolt, Adrian Davies and came away buzzing. Just do it and get the first one under your belt and you'll be hooked.

I'd echo cuntos post.
I have one bloke in my gym who's exactly like that .. always next year.
There's no better way of getting experience than entering a comp. Don't worry about whether you feel ready or not ( I always have doubts as to whether I've trained well enough coming up to my comps). Make your first lift easy and then the skies the limit after that. U'll get a real buzz getting lifts passed in a competition environment by the judges. Your confidence will grow which in turn will up your lifts/totals. Go for it and enjoy it :)

Agree with Phil on this. Every comp I've been to whether competing or just spectating; the newer lifters or novices always get loads of extra encouragement from everyone. Doesn't matter what u lift, it's the fact that you've got the guts to go up on the platform and have a go. Powerlifting feds in general want to get people interested in the sport not turn them away from it.
Our very own Johnny Wildboar (hope u don't mind using u JW) is a good example. He had a fantastic first comp in Birmingham, went out there gave it his all, got the crowd behind him and looked like he was thoroughly enjoying himself ... brilliant. And it was really entertaining for us spectators to watch.

Thats cool

I dont get any supports from mates or family - too dangerous blah blah, then theres the 'can you lift if you are deaf' rubbish!

I suppose they will have to come up with a system where commands are used, does someone tell you when to lift etc?

Also what am i expected to wear at the comp in colchester?

if its a BWLA comp im pretty sure you won't get a signal to press up from your chest. You will get a start and a rack command though.

I had my first comp at the uk open the other week and people really do go out of there way to help you out buddy. Everyone has been in the position of being a newbie and all want to help out...especially the guys with loads of experience.

Best of luck and enjoy it mate.

Oh, you will need a leotard to lift in regardless of whether you are raw or equipped. they are not expensive, Andy B will likely have some in stock...

if you are deaf then the ref will give you a visual comand all you will need to do is let them know at the weigh in.
so what are you waiting for join up and lift

my brother in law says yeh i can go for it, but my sister is worrying that i'll be late. i'd rather lift than go to my own wedding. i not registered so looks like i won't be going. just started a new routine and will try my max in around 2 months. might take a week off in 4 weeks then try a max to see where i am.

As long as you don't keep making excuses not to compete mate, you will be fine. What I mean is... of course you must go to your sister's wedding, but you also must get your name down for a comp ASAP and let your family etc know that you are not available on that date. You'll love it!

cuntos - i've done 4 comps already, one of which was the british. i'm a lanky guy with long arms but due to back problems i'm trying to be a bench specialist, while doing some upper back and leg work to try and maintain my deadlift as much as i can.
