For anyone who's interested we had a good turnout at our county champs this wknd with a number of new young lifters. The most important aspect of this competition was not qualifying totals or records but getting people involved in the sport of powerlifitng, in particular the youth.

A big turn out at the first Dorset held Championships for many a year resulted in several British, South West, and Dorset records being exceeded. Seventeen lifters competed in the full BWLA county event with a further eight competing in a development weight lifting and powerlifting trial. Amongst the challengers in the BWLA champs.were current and former British age group champions including Paul Hooker,Nick Rees, Mike Triggs, Randy Hayes, Dan Brunsden, Sam Bolton and Steve Tyers.

The best lifter was Paul Hooker with 230 160 260 totallng 650kg unequipped. Although not able to be ratified at this event several listed British records were beaten.Steve Tyers Oakmead, deadlifted 160kg at 52kg bodyweight exceeding his own under eighteen national record three times during his session. Dan Brunsden of Bournemouth College beat the UK under eighteen deadlift record several times achieving 245kg on a fourth attempt.Nick Rees Bournemouth A.C lifted the heaviest weight of the day with 272.5kg deadlift which betters the British unequipped 90 kg record. The organisers look forward to further improvements in running events in Dorset and recruiting more lifters from this locality. The athletic club wishes to thank all the helper’s loaders and referees for their commitment and support.

Weightlifting.

Yr11 Sam Chappel 68kg 45 60 105kg Total
Yr9 Andy Hayes 70.3kg 65 80 145kg Total
U23 Jennie Molloy 68.5kg 62.5 65 127.5kg total
cleaned 85kg failed jerk
sen Dan Cleather 90kg 85 110 195kg Total
Yr11 Ali McCulchin 92.2kg 62.5 92.5 155kg Total
U17 Randy Hayes 95.1kg 100 failed all jerks
sen Simon Fricker 95.5kg 95 110 205kg Total

Great lifting by Andy Hayes year 9 but Jennie Molloy was the big surprise who lifted well in her first competition and is keener than ever to really give it a serious try alongside her international hurdling and sprinting duties. Interesting debut by Dan Cleather, an E.I.S. strength coach, who opened his account with a solid 195kg Total.Randy Hayes aged 16, started well with an easy snatch of 100kg but failed his jerks but he returned well later with an unequipped powerlifting total of 565kg.

A new crop of lifters showed great enthusiasm and appeared to be bitten by the powerlifting bug. Luke Frohlich yr11 Oakmead was particularly impressive totalling 320kg at 60kg bodyweight. We all look forward to their continued progress.

THE MEMBERSHIP OF BOURNEMOUTH ATHLETIC CLUB WISH TO EXPRESS THEIR THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO MAKE THE DORSET CHAMPIONSHIPS AND BAC TRIALS SUCH AN ENJOYABLE AND SUCCESSFUL EVENT FOR THE COMPETITORS AND SPECTATORS.

Special mention should be made regarding the efforts of the following. Ken Conroy, MC. John and Monica Porter who were our guests of honour and did numerous other vital jobs to keep the show on the road. Steve Murphy, Ian Tyers,Nick Rees, and our county rep Paul Hooker who loaded and spotted with John and Monica. Without the help of Gail Chappel and other athletes from the club to set up and run the event we would not have been able to achieve anything. Special thanks go to them.
