HardcorePowerlifting.com Official Press Release
April 11th, 2005
The region of SE Idaho and NE Washington is fast becoming world renowned as a bastion for athletes engaged in the sport of powerlifting. Brent Mikesell, a Spokane high school math teacher, has set the all time squat record twice since 2002. Priscilla Ribic, another resident of Spokane, has represented the USA multiple times at international championships held over in Europe. Both FORZA Strength Systems (makers of the top competition benchpress in the country) and The Powerlifting Superstore (a national powerlifting supply mail order business) were founded in the Spokane Valley. In addition, HardcorePowerlifting.com and Monster Muscle Magazine (two leading, national powerlifting news sources) operate out of Spokane, Washington and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho respectively.
Ashley Roberts represents the next generation of national calibers powerlifters to be hailing from our hometown region! Born in Southampton, England, Roberts moved to Moscow in the fall of 2003 to attend the University of Idaho. He is currently still enrolled at U of I and is studying for a major in Physical Education and a minor in Health. Ashley is also a Resident Assistant on campus and he works as a volunteer Strength & Conditioning Coach for the university’s varsity sports program. Ashley’s post collegiate plans include getting certified as a strength & conditioning coach and working at a Division 1 school in NW Idaho or SW Washington.
Representing Moscow with pride since moving here Ashley began his powerlifting competition career by setting the Idaho state record at the American Powerlifting Northwest Championships in Kennewick in February of 2003. He then went on to take 1st place at the Benchpress & Deadlift Championships in Kennewick, Washington and again set another state record in the pull. His victory at the Championship took him to Las Vegas for the World Championships and he returned to Idaho with the 1st place trophy in hand! In February of 2004, he began training with Matt Ludwig (now WSU strength coach) and Brent Mikesell (squat world record holder and high school gym coach). Running off their professional coaching Ashley went on to win the Hi Test Pro Am in Post Falls, ID and the Iron Gladiators Classic in Spokane, WA, both held in the spring of 2004. He continued his successful lifting endeavors by winning the World Record Breakers and setting more Idaho state powerlifting records.
Ashley’s powerlifting achievements have taken him halfway around the world as he was invited to guest lift at the British Powerlifting Championships last summer! This last December he earned back to back wins at the Hi Test and Big Bear’s Powerlifting Classics. All these wins lead up to one purpose, to build thestrength needed to qualify for the AmericanPowerlifting Senior Nationals (one of the longest running and most prestigious national championships in the world.) Roberts accomplished this lofty goal by squatting 705 pounds, bench pressing 475 pounds and deadlifting 610 pounds as a 242 pound junior lifter!
Ashley Roberts is now preparing to represent Moscow at the American Powerlifting Senior Nationals and he needs your support! This prestigious national lifting championship will be held in Detroit, Michigan on Fourth of July weekend. Powerlifting has been an official sport in the USA for over forty years, and it’s routinely featured on ESPN2 and Comcast Sports Net, but it’s not a sport that receives collegiate funding and so is very financially taxing for a college athlete to pursue and this damages America’s prospects’ chances for winning on an international level.
As the Co-Owner of Spokane’s Hardcore Powerlifting.com I urge you and your fellow local Washington and Idaho business owners to please join me in supporting this University of Idaho’s quest to attend and compete at this year’s American powerlifting senior nationals. Our region is building a winning powerlifting tradition and it’s a great local boast to be able to rightly lay claim to some of the best weight lifters of all time.
Ashley Roberts is one of the next generation of national champion powerlifters to be coming out of our towns and I would like to see the community stand up and support him by assisting him with the cost of traveling too Michigan to compete. Please sponsor Ashley Roberts and allow this ambitious student athlete to fulfill his dream of competing against the very best. He’s qualified and earned the right and now he just needs our sponsorship and corporate support to make it happen.
Thank you for your consideration,
