...and they're encased in rubber so they'll bounce when you drop them. The only problem is that they are almost £100 each!

Yeah, and they'd make that deadlift helper thing that you made redundant because I'd imagine they are quite a bit taller than 20kg plates.

Wonder how much a engineering firm would charge to knock some up?
Worth a few calls?

Are they much bigger than the regular 20kg plates or are they just wider?

They are just wider. Some are a little bigger in diameter. If you notice most 20kg plates have a cut out. They are not the same width from edge to centre, 50kg plates are.
You can't go wrong with Golden Arrow's link. Delivery would be absolutely silly when I order 5 x 50kg plates, but that links gives free delivery. They are the same company that I bought my home gym from and they group addresses from the south together and then deliver them all in one day with their own driver they employ on a salary. Works out cheaper than courier charges.
I think it would be hard to find an engineeering firm to take on such a task, as the plate have to be cast, unless they were making big numbers. It costs too much to make the moulds and heat the furnace to do small runs.

How do they compare to the 25kg plates? Are they the same dimensions as two 25kg plates stuck together or are they smaller than that?

Smaller because of no cut out.
