Well how is a strongman supposed to train? Gym training is freestyle for most strongmen (I think most enjoy bodybuilding type training to be honest), whatever they wanna do, but its the event training that they really focus on I think. I know Mariusz trains the events kind of like every day of the week! I think it's the event training that counts.

I thought he was doing squats in the second video at first and was just going to comment on how he squats like most of the guys in my gym - until he started pressing the thing over his head! That looks like 180kgs + the collars doesn't it?

I know he's got his haters but I think Mariusz is awesome!

I love the guy. He's awesome. Strong as hell and conditioned like a bodybuilder.

I would expect a strongman to train hard and heavy with minimal compound exercises, plus event training.

I have Sven Karlsen's DVD and he trains more like a powerlifter in the gym plus event training.

Yeah, I've got Svends DVD aswell, it's pretty good - especially the part where he triples 370kgs in the deadlift!

If I was a strongman, I'd train events almost every day and stay away from the gym (aside from the odd squat or deadlift). But Mariusz wants to look pretty :)

VIKING POWER!!!!

The thing is strongman competitions usually consist of at least one powerlifting event, deadlift being the most popular but you often see the squat also.

The squat and deadlift also have great carry over for many strongman events, it makes sense to train these lifts in the gym as well as event training.

Did you see Svend's "Karlsen Squats" on the hack squat machine on the DVD?

I showed it to a couple of rugby props in the gym aboy 3 or 4 months ago and said that if it helps Svend with the tyre flip then it may help them whilst driving in the scrum. Since then, just about every rugby player that uses the gym now seems to be doing them because the first 2 that I showed it to are sure that it's really helped them.

That's the good thing about strongman training, it has a good carry over into loads of other sports and even everyday life.

Strongman more so than any other strength training.

Yeah I remember the hack squats he done. Do you remember seeing him farmers walk some stupid weight across snow and then dive in the ice cold river. I was shivering whatching it.

Yeah for a Viking Bath.....

That bloke's a nutter! I liked the way he just kicked the doors open and then went outside with the farmers implements.

My 6 year old kid loves Svend - he even wanted me to have a tatto with "VIKING POWER" on it!
